Use websites as landing pages
A big step in having success with GMB, or having success at all, is accepting that GMB will accomplish far more than a personal website ever can. GMB will inevitably diminish your websites’ traffic, but the trade-off of GMB’s benefits will be worth it. It is definitely understandable to not want your content to be completely subservient to Google, but GMB currently uploads information and keeps it up to date far quicker than anything else can. If you want to be successful with GMB, your other links, sites and traffic should only serve as a means of connecting to and promoting GMB.
GMBs’ structure is essentially the same basic structure as websites; images, posts, views, pictures, Q&A’s, etc. The key difference with GMB is that you can communicate exactly what that structure is, whereas on personal sites that information is completely fractured. It may be hard to sacrifice your websites’ traffic for GMB, but it offers a greater chance at success in the long run.
